Vitamin D Prevents DimentiaVitamin D is essential for healthy bones and protection against cancer and diabetes, but new research is showing that it may also play an important role in mental health. After a recent study, scientists are suggesting that those over the age of 60 should increase their vitamin D intake in order to ward off dementia.

Adults 60 years and older who have a vitamin D deficiency show a rapid mental decline that is three times faster than those with sufficient levels. This increases the risk of dementia and other cognitive disorders.

How can you get more vitamin D? It is difficult to get the proper amount of vitamin D through diet alone, so scientists are suggesting taking supplements. Along with an increased vitamin D intake, physical activity, mental stimulation and healthy blood pressure will also help reduce the risk of dementia.

This new research is promising in terms of dementia prevention, but scientists are still unsure whether or not vitamin D supplements can slow down mental decline that is already taking place.
