Summer Activities For Seniors

wilf-summer-activites-seniorsSummer is quickly approaching, which means it is time to spend more time outdoors. Spending time in the sun and fresh air is very beneficial for seniors. It gives them a change of scenery and is known to decrease their chance of isolation and depression. Try some of these fun summer activities that you and your loved one will enjoy:

Planting in a garden is actually a great form of exercise for older adults. This activity also gives seniors a sense of accomplishment, which will improve mood and decrease anxiety levels. Raised garden beds and planter pots are some modifications you can make for those with limited mobility. They can tend to your own garden at home, or join a community garden.

Get some friends and family together for a picnic in the backyard or at a local destination. Be sure that wherever you host the get together there are picnic tables, and that those tables are not too far from where you parked. Most importantly, make sure to pack plenty of nutritious foods for seniors!

Local Events

Many communities host free outdoor events such as concerts, theater productions or fairs. This can be a great way to get your senior loved one out of the house and experience a different form of entertainment. Check your local calendar to see if there are any events your family might enjoy together.

Did your loved one love to fish when they were younger? If so, it is still possible for them to enjoy it as a senior. Depending on their specific needs, head over to a pier or take off on a boat to enjoy a lovely day by the water, catching fish and spending time with others. Be sure that there is someone around to handle the gear and assure that your family member is safe.

A fun way to get exercise, while maintaining a cool body temperature, is swimming. You may know someone who has a pool, or your local community may have a pool open to the public. Try a senior water aerobics class for an effective, low-impact workout.

Some other great activities your elderly loved one may enjoy in the summer include kite flying, metal detecting, reading outside or taking a walk. Don’t forget to take the proper precautions to keep your loved one safe in the sun. Always have water on hand, and offer it to them frequently. Older adults are at greater risk of dehydration and are less likely to feel thirsty.

Also, protect their sensitive skin with sunscreen, a hat and a light sweater. Sunglasses should also be kept nearby for eye protection. It is suggested to do these activities in the early morning or late afternoon, so that you are staying out of the sun during its strongest hours of the day. Read our blog for more ways to make sure your summer is safe for seniors.

Spending time outside will help your loved one stay mentally sharp, physically active and emotionally content. Take part in the activities at Stein Assisted Living or Wilentz Senior Residence. For more information, contact us at (732) 568-1155, [email protected] or visit us at
