The seasons are changing, and seniors should try to stay warm regardless if they are indoors or out. Most seniors are prone to cold weather sensitivity. The dropping temperatures can cause mobility issues and achy joints, and make seniors more susceptible to weather-related health issues like hypothermia.

Dressing in layers is a good idea. If the layers become too warm, it’s easy to take something off. Just allow for a lose fit so they feel comfortable and it doesn’t prohibit their mobility or routine. Scarves are a good idea – keeping the neck warm can create upper body warmth. And scarves, gloves, and hats are a good idea for going outdoors, even if the temperature is just mildly cold. Moisture that occurs with cold weather is also uncomfortable for some seniors, so you may want to buy them some water-resistant clothing for cold, wet days.

And don’t let sensitivity to cold weather prevent your loved one from participating in activities, especially festive seasonal activities that are fun for all. Lots of fall and winter activities have an indoor component or you can swap them for a similar alternative.

Fall is one of the most beautiful times at Wilf Campus and our residents remain safe and active. A little cool weather did not slow our residents from walking in our annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s recently, and we’ve got exciting (and warm!) plans for the upcoming winter. Enjoy the seasons!
